A sofa takes more everyday wear than almost anything else in the house: spills, pets, hands, feet and years of simply being sat on. Direct Cleaning Services cleans fabric sofas, armchairs, footstools and dining chairs in homes across Essex, and upholstered seating in offices, receptions and hospitality venues. The first step is always to find out exactly what the fabric is, because that decides how it can be cleaned.
Checking the care code first
Most upholstered furniture has a label, usually under a seat cushion or on the base, with a cleaning code. W means water-based cleaning is suitable, S means solvent-based cleaning only, W/S means either can be used, and X means the fabric should only be vacuumed. That code tells us what is safe before any product goes near the fabric.
If the label has been removed, we look at the fabric itself and explain the options. Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool behave differently from synthetics, and viscose blends and velvet need particular care.
Testing before cleaning
Before cleaning the whole piece, we test a small, hidden area for colour-fastness and any sign of shrinking or texture change. Some dyes, especially on older or imported fabrics, can move when they get damp. If the test shows a problem, we change the approach or tell you honestly that the piece should not be wet cleaned.
Stains and odours
Tell us what caused a stain and how long it has been there. Fresh drink and food spills are usually easier than marks that have set over months, and ink, dye and some pet stains can be stubborn. Some marks will lighten without disappearing completely, and we explain that before we start rather than afterwards.
Odours from pets or smoke often sit in the cushion filling as well as the cover. Cleaning the fabric makes a noticeable difference, but deeply absorbed smells may not be removed entirely. If you spill something before we arrive, blot it gently rather than rubbing, which can spread the stain and damage the pile.
Drying and using your sofa again
Drying depends on the fabric, how much moisture the clean needs and the airflow in the room. Opening a window or keeping the room warm helps. We will confirm on the day when the sofa can be sat on again. Please do not take cushion covers off to put in a washing machine afterwards, as many covers shrink and will not fit back on.
Leather sofas
Leather needs a different approach from fabric, so mention it when you enquire. We look at the type of leather, its finish and its condition before agreeing what can be done. Cleaning can lift surface dirt and grime, but cracked, faded or worn leather is not something cleaning can restore.
Upholstered seating for businesses
Reception sofas, meeting room chairs, office seating and restaurant or bar banquettes all collect marks from constant use. We plan business upholstery cleaning within our 8am to 6pm hours so seating is out of use for as little of your working day as possible, and it can be booked alongside commercial carpet cleaning for the same premises.
