Tiles themselves are usually easy to wipe; the grout between them is not. Over time those thin lines turn grey, brown or black, and a bathroom or kitchen floor can look tired even when the tiles are in perfect condition. Direct Cleaning Services cleans wall and floor tiles and grout in kitchens and bathrooms across Essex, as well as washrooms and staff kitchens in commercial premises.
Why grout darkens
Most grout is cement-based and porous. It soaks up water, soap residue, body oils and cooking grease, and on floors the dirty water from everyday mopping settles into the lines because they sit slightly lower than the tiles. In showers and around baths, constant damp gives mould a foothold.
Wiping the tiles keeps their faces clean, but it can push grime further into the grout. Cleaning grout properly means working along the lines themselves, not just over the surface.
What cleaning can and cannot fix
Surface dirt and residue can be lifted from grout, often with a big difference in colour. Grout that is stained all the way through may lighten without returning to its original shade. Grout that has cracked, crumbled or gone missing has failed, and it needs regrouting, which is a repair rather than a clean.
Silicone sealant around baths, showers and sinks is different from grout. When black mould has grown into the silicone itself, the usual answer is to replace the sealant. We will tell you honestly what we see before the work starts.
Walls, floors and showers
Shower enclosures collect limescale on the tiles and screen as well as in the grout. Kitchen splashbacks build up grease behind the hob, and floor tiles in kitchens and hallways take the heaviest traffic. Ceramic and porcelain tiles can take a firmer clean than most other materials, which gives more scope to bring the grout back.
Natural stone tiles
Marble, travertine, limestone and slate need gentler treatment. Acidic products, including many bathroom limescale removers, can etch and dull natural stone permanently, so we use pH-neutral products and a softer approach on these surfaces. If you are not sure what your tiles are made of, tell us when you enquire and we will check on the day.
Sealing after cleaning
Once grout is clean and dry, sealing it can help it resist staining and make day-to-day cleaning easier. Whether sealing is worthwhile depends on the grout, the tiles and how the room is used, so it is something we discuss with you on site rather than an automatic part of every job.
Commercial washrooms and kitchens
Office washrooms, staff kitchens and customer toilets are cleaned every day, but the grout lines still darken over time. A periodic tile and grout clean brings them back between routine visits. For larger tiled floor areas in businesses, our hard floor cleaning covers scrubbing and maintaining the whole floor.
