Sheets and protectors go through the wash, but the mattress underneath gathers dust, sweat marks and the odd spilt drink year after year. Direct Cleaning Services cleans mattresses in homes across Essex, and in holiday lets and rented properties between guests or tenants.
Why a mattress is not cleaned like a carpet
A carpet is a thin layer lying on a floor, and it dries from the top. A mattress is a deep block of foam, springs, memory foam or natural fillings such as wool and cotton. Water that soaks into it has nowhere to go, and a mattress that stays damp inside can start to smell or grow mould.
So mattresses are cleaned with as little moisture as possible. The work happens at the surface: a thorough vacuum first to lift loose dust, then targeted treatment of marks, keeping the filling dry.
Checking the label
The manufacturer's label tells us what the mattress is made of and often gives cleaning advice. Memory foam, hybrid and natural-fibre mattresses each have their own limits, and some manufacturers' warranties ask for the mattress to be kept free of stains. If you still have the paperwork, have a look before we visit, or simply show us the label on the day.
Dust, marks and odours
We vacuum the sleeping surface, the sides, the seams and around any buttons or tufting, where dust collects. If the mattress is designed to be turned, both sides can be cleaned. Marks from sweat, tea, coffee and children's accidents are treated individually, and odours are tackled at the same time.
Older stains that have been there for years may lighten rather than vanish, and we will tell you what is realistic before we begin. A mattress with damaged springs or sagging foam may be due for replacement rather than cleaning.
Drying before you make the bed
Even a low-moisture clean leaves the surface slightly damp. Leave the mattress uncovered with a window open or the room warm, and we will advise on the day when the bed can be made up again. Fitting a washable mattress protector afterwards helps keep it clean for longer.
Holiday lets and landlords
Mattresses in holiday lets, Airbnb properties and furnished rentals see more sleepers than one in a family home. Cleaning between bookings or tenancies keeps them presentable for the next guest. Several mattresses can be cleaned in a single visit, and the work can be arranged alongside a deep clean of the property.
Combining with carpets and upholstery
If the bedroom carpet needs attention too, carpet cleaning can be done in the same visit, once the mattress is finished. Upholstered headboards, bedroom chairs and the sofa downstairs can be added through our upholstery cleaning, so the whole job is planned at once.
