Graffiti left in place tends to attract more, and it makes a building look neglected however well it is kept inside. Direct Cleaning Services removes graffiti from brick, render, stone, metal shutters, signage and cladding for businesses, landlords and public buildings across Essex. Every surface is tested before work starts, and the method is chosen to suit both the paint and the material beneath it.
A test patch comes first
Graffiti removal is a balance between lifting the paint and protecting what lies underneath. Spray paint, marker pen and sticker residue behave differently, and so do the surfaces they end up on. Before treating the whole area, a small patch is tested to see how the paint responds and how the surface copes. That test decides the remover, how long it is left to work and whether it is rinsed off with pressure, hot water or gentle hand work.
Brick, stone and render
Porous surfaces such as brick, natural stone and render draw paint into their pores, which makes them the hardest to clean. A remover is applied to break the paint down and then rinsed at a pressure and temperature suited to the material, with care taken over mortar joints and softer stone. Render, particularly painted or textured finishes, needs a low-pressure approach to avoid damage, in keeping with the way we clean render elsewhere.
Shutters, signage and cladding
Smooth surfaces such as powder-coated shutters, aluminium signs and cladding panels do not absorb paint in the same way, but their factory coatings can be dulled or stripped by the wrong product. Removers suited to coated finishes are used, and the work is done carefully so the coating is left intact. Higher sections of cladding and signage can be reached with the powered access used for our cladding cleaning.
The possibility of a ghost mark
On porous surfaces, some paints soak in far enough that a faint shadow, often called a ghost mark, may remain once the bulk of the graffiti has gone. This is a possibility rather than a certainty; it depends on the paint, how long it has been there and the surface underneath. After the test patch we tell you what result is realistic, so there are no surprises. Dealing with graffiti promptly gives the best chance of a clean finish.
Protective coatings
On walls and shutters that are targeted again and again, an anti-graffiti coating can make future removal easier. Coatings differ in how they work and which surfaces they suit, so this is something to talk through on site once we have seen the building.
Booking graffiti removal
The service is available for shops and offices, landlords and managing agents, schools, councils and other public buildings. It can be booked as a one-off or combined with pressure washing of the paving below, or with chewing gum removal at the entrance, so the whole frontage improves together. A photo of the graffiti and the surface it is on helps us understand the job before visiting.
