Block paving is made up of hundreds of individual blocks held in place by the sand in the joints between them. That is what makes it attractive, and it is also what makes it different to clean. Direct Cleaning Services cleans block-paved driveways, paths and patios at homes across south Essex, treating the face of the blocks and the joints as two parts of the same job.
Why block paving needs its own approach
On tarmac or resin, dirt sits on top of one continuous layer. On block paving, most of the trouble lives in the gaps. Weeds root in the joints, moss creeps along them in shaded corners, and the sand that locks each block in place is gradually lost to rain and weather. A clean that only looks at the face of the blocks can leave the joints worse off than before.
That is why we look at the joints first when we visit. Established weeds, patches of moss and stretches where the sand has already dropped tell us more about the work needed than the width of the drive alone. Blocks that rock underfoot or sit lower than their neighbours are worth pointing out too, because cleaning will not correct a problem with the base underneath them.
Lifting dirt, weeds and moss
The blocks are pressure cleaned with professional rotary surface cleaners, which lift dirt, moss and algae evenly across the surface without leaving stripes. Weeds and moss are taken out of the joints as part of the clean, and the area is cleaned up afterwards so it is ready to use again.
Where green growth is the recurring complaint, a biocide treatment can be added after cleaning. It is most useful on shaded strips, such as the edge beside a fence or a side path that rarely sees the sun, where algae tends to come back first.
Oil, rust and tyre marks
Marks left by cars are assessed separately from general dirt. Oil drips, rust spots and tyre marks can often be reduced with targeted treatments, but they behave differently from moss and grime and some may not lift completely. We will tell you honestly, before the work starts, what is likely to come out and what may remain.
If there are marks you are particularly worried about, point them out when we quote or send a photograph with your enquiry. Knowing where a car usually stands, or where a vehicle that leaked was once parked, helps us explain the options.
Re-sanding and sealing, discussed on site
Once the blocks are clean, the joints can be re-filled with kiln-dried sand so the blocks stay locked together. Whether that is needed, and across how much of the paving, is something we agree with you on site after looking at the joints, rather than assuming every drive needs the same treatment.
Sealing is a further option some homeowners ask about to protect the finish. It is not an automatic part of every booking. If you are interested, raise it during the visit and we will talk it through alongside the condition of your paving.
Driveways, paths and patios
Block paving is not only used for driveways. Plenty of homes have a block-paved path to the front door, edging around a lawn or a patio laid in the same style. Tell us which areas you want included and whether cars will need to be moved, so access can be planned. We usually need an outside tap, so mention it if water could be a problem.
If your drive mixes materials, for example block edging around a tarmac centre, say so. Each surface is cleaned in the way that suits it, and the quote will describe both. You deal directly with Jason or Lucas Prior, and the price is agreed before any work begins.
