What affects the cost of sofa and upholstery cleaning

By Direct Cleaning Services · Updated

Short answer

The cost of sofa and upholstery cleaning depends mainly on how many seats and pieces there are, what the fabric is and what its care code allows, and how heavily stained or soiled it is. Leather is assessed separately from fabric, and pet odours, removable cushions and adding carpets or a mattress to the same visit all affect the quote. Photos of the furniture and its care label make an accurate quote much easier.

Why two sofas can be quoted differently

A two-seater in a hard-wearing synthetic fabric that has had the odd spill is a straightforward job. A large corner sofa in a pale viscose blend, with a dog that sleeps on it, is not, even though both are just a sofa. The fabric decides which cleaning methods are safe, and the amount of soiling decides how much work it takes, so upholstery quotes are built around the piece itself.

The factors that change the quote

  • Number of seats: a two-seater, three-seater and large corner sofa differ in fabric area, and a corner unit often has a chaise or several sections.
  • Number of pieces: matching armchairs, footstools, dining chairs and scatter cushions each add to the job.
  • Fabric type: synthetics, cotton, linen, wool, velvet and viscose blends each behave differently, and some need a gentler, slower approach.
  • Care code: W allows water-based cleaning, S means solvent-based only, W/S allows either, and X means vacuum only, which limits what can be done.
  • Leather or fabric: leather needs a different approach and is assessed on its type, finish and condition.
  • Stains: fresh food and drink marks differ from ink, dye or marks that have set over months, and some will lighten without disappearing.
  • Pet hair and odours: heavy pet hair needs removing first, and odours that have reached the cushion filling take more work.
  • Removable cushions: cushions that lift out let the seat deck and frame edges be cleaned properly; fixed cushions are cleaned in place.
  • Combined bookings: adding carpets, rugs or a mattress to the same visit can be planned together.
  • Business seating: reception chairs, office seating or banquettes in hospitality venues are quoted on the number and type of pieces.

What a good quote should include

A clear upholstery quote should show what is being cleaned and how. Check for:

  1. Each piece listed, with the number of seats and any loose cushions.
  2. Confirmation that the care code will be checked and a hidden area tested before the whole piece is cleaned.
  3. What can realistically be expected from specific stains or odours, explained before the work starts.
  4. Whether leather pieces are included and what cleaning can and cannot achieve on worn leather.
  5. Guidance on drying and when the furniture can be used again, confirmed on the day.

How to compare quotes like for like

Make sure every company is quoting for the same pieces and the same outcome. A quote that seems cheaper may leave out the cushions, the footstool or the stain treatment. Ask whether they test the fabric first and what they will do if it fails the test, because a business that cleans every fabric the same way risks shrinkage, colour run or texture change. A good cleaner will sometimes tell you a piece should not be wet cleaned at all, and that honesty is worth more than a low figure.

Keeping the cost down

Vacuum upholstery regularly with a brush attachment, blot spills straight away rather than rubbing, and use a throw where pets like to sleep. Do not put removable covers in the washing machine, as many shrink and will not fit back on. Our guide to cleaning a sofa explains safe ways to deal with everyday marks between professional cleans.

When to call a professional

Call a professional for delicate fabrics, anything marked S or X, large stains, pet odours that have soaked into the cushions, or if you are unsure what the fabric is. Testing and choosing the right method protects the furniture as well as cleaning it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does sofa cleaning cost?

It depends on the number of seats and pieces, the fabric and its care code, leather or fabric, and how stained or soiled it is. A quote based on your furniture is the only reliable figure.

Does the fabric type affect the price?

It can. Some fabrics, such as viscose blends and velvet, need a gentler approach, and the care code decides which methods are safe to use.

Is it cheaper to clean a sofa with carpets?

Booking carpets, rugs or a mattress at the same visit lets everything be planned as one job rather than separate trips.
