How often should carpets be cleaned?

By Direct Cleaning Services · Updated

Short answer

There is no fixed rule that suits every home. Carpets in busy hallways, homes with pets or young children, and rooms used every day need cleaning more often than a guest bedroom. Check your carpet manufacturer's care guidance, as some warranties ask for periodic professional cleaning. Between deep cleans, regular vacuuming and treating spills quickly make the biggest difference.

Everyday care comes first

How often a carpet needs a deep clean depends a lot on what happens in between. Regular vacuuming removes grit before it is trodden down into the pile, where it rubs against the fibres and makes walkways look flat and grey. Busy areas benefit from more frequent vacuuming than rooms that are rarely used.

Treating spills straight away also matters. A spill blotted up at once rarely becomes a permanent stain, while one left to dry can be much harder to shift. Our guide to getting stains out of carpet explains the method.

Footfall

The more people walk on a carpet, the faster it gets dirty. Hallways, stairs and the route from the back door through the kitchen take far more traffic than a bedroom, and they show it first. A household of several adults, or a home where shoes are worn indoors, will usually need carpets cleaned more often than a quiet home where shoes come off at the door.

It is common to clean the busiest areas more often than the rest. A hallway, stairs and landing can be cleaned on their own without doing every room.

Pets and children

Pets bring in mud on their paws, shed hair and the odd accident. Hair and dander work into the pile, and carpets in rooms where pets sleep or lie in the sun tend to need more attention. Children bring spills, crumbs, play dough and muddy shoes. Homes with either usually find carpets need cleaning more often than a home without them.

The carpet and its warranty

Light-coloured carpets show dirt sooner than darker or patterned ones, though dark carpets can show lint and pet hair. Deep piles hide dirt for longer but hold more of it. Wool and natural fibres have their own care needs.

Look out the paperwork that came with your carpet, or check the manufacturer's care guidance. Some carpet warranties ask for regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning, and may specify the cleaning methods that are suitable. Following that guidance helps keep the warranty valid.

Signs your carpet is due a clean

  1. Walkways look darker, greyer or flatter than the rest of the carpet, especially in doorways and along the main route through a room.
  2. Vacuuming no longer brightens the carpet, because the soiling is deeper than the vacuum reaches.
  3. Stains have built up, or old spills have left marks that you have not been able to remove.
  4. There is a smell, perhaps from pets, cooking or damp, that does not go away after vacuuming and airing the room.
  5. The pile feels rough or matted rather than soft.
  6. You have a specific reason, such as moving in or out, the end of a tenancy, building work in the home or preparing a room for a new arrival.

Building a routine that suits your home

A practical approach is to treat the busiest areas as a priority and the rest of the house as and when needed. Some households find a yearly clean of the main rooms and more frequent attention to hallways and stairs works for them; others clean when the signs above appear. Use doormats at every entrance, and consider shoes off indoors, to reduce how much grit reaches the carpet.

Moving furniture slightly every so often also helps the carpet wear evenly, rather than having a clean patch under a sofa and a worn path around it.

When to call a professional

A professional clean is worth booking when walkways stay grey after vacuuming, when stains and smells will not shift, or when you want a thorough result for a move, tenancy handover or after building work. A professional can also advise on suitable methods for wool and natural fibres.

Frequently asked questions

How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

It depends on footfall, pets, children and the carpet itself. Many households clean the busiest areas more often than the rest. Check your carpet's warranty, as some ask for periodic professional cleaning.

Can cleaning a carpet too often damage it?

Cleaning with the wrong method, too much water or too much detergent can cause problems. Cleaning with a suitable method when the carpet needs it should not.

Do I need to clean the whole house at once?

No. Hallways, stairs and landings can be cleaned on their own, and other rooms done when they need it.
