What affects the cost of carpet cleaning

By Direct Cleaning Services · Updated

Short answer

The cost of carpet cleaning depends on how much carpet there is, including stairs and landings, the type of fibre, how dirty or stained it is, whether furniture needs moving, and whether rugs or upholstery are added. Access, parking and whether the carpet is in a home or a business also make a difference. A quote based on your rooms and their condition is the only reliable way to know the cost.

Why prices vary so much

Carpet cleaning prices are often advertised per room, but rooms are not all the same size, and a room price may or may not include the hallway, stairs or moving furniture. A lightly used spare bedroom and a family lounge with a busy route to the garden door are very different jobs. Understanding what drives the price helps you get an accurate quote and compare fairly.

The factors that change the price

  • Rooms and area: how many rooms, and how large they are. Through-lounges, open-plan spaces and large bedrooms take longer than small rooms.
  • Stairs and landings: stairs are cleaned step by step and usually priced separately from rooms.
  • Fibre type: wool, synthetic and blended carpets need different products and care, and some delicate fibres need a gentler approach.
  • Condition and stains: heavy soiling on main routes, pet accidents, or a lot of individual stains add time. Some old stains may lighten rather than disappear.
  • Furniture moving: whether sofas, beds and other furniture need moving, and whether anything is too heavy or fragile to move.
  • Rugs and upholstery: adding rugs, sofas, chairs or mattresses to the same visit changes the overall quote.
  • Access and parking: upper-floor flats, long carries from the van and restricted parking can affect how the job is planned.
  • Home or business: commercial carpets in offices and shops are usually larger areas, may need cleaning out of hours and are often part of a regular maintenance plan.

What a good quote should include

  1. Exactly which rooms, stairs, landings and hallways are included.
  2. Whether furniture moving is included, and which items will be moved.
  3. How stains will be treated, and an honest note that some marks may not come out completely.
  4. The cleaning method to be used for your carpet type.
  5. Any extras, such as rugs or upholstery, listed separately.
  6. Practical points such as parking, access and what you need to do before the visit.

Comparing quotes like for like

Make sure each quote covers the same rooms, stairs and extras. A low room price that excludes stairs, hallways or furniture moving can end up costing more than a quote that includes them. Ask how the company deals with stains, and whether the price is fixed or could change on the day. Reviews from previous customers are often a good guide to how carefully the work is done.

It also helps to understand the method. Our guide to steam cleaning versus shampooing carpets explains the main approaches, and our guide to drying times explains what affects how soon you can use the room again.

Getting the most from your booking

Clear small items, toys and anything fragile from the floor before the visit, and point out any stains you know about and what caused them. Combining rooms, stairs and rugs in one booking makes better use of the visit than several separate ones. Vacuuming regularly and dealing with spills quickly between professional cleans keeps carpets in better condition for longer; our guides to removing carpet stains and how often carpets should be cleaned cover both.

If you have tried to deep clean the carpet yourself and want to know what is realistic at home, our guide to deep cleaning a carpet explains the options.

Carpet cleaning for businesses

Office, shop and commercial carpets are usually quoted on the area and the frequency of cleaning, and timing matters to avoid disrupting staff and customers. For business carpets, our commercial cleaning cost guide explains how contract pricing works more generally.

When to call a professional

If carpets are heavily soiled on the main routes, if stains have not responded to home treatment, or if you are preparing for a move or the end of a tenancy, a professional clean is usually the most effective option.

We clean household carpets and rugs across south Essex, including before moving house, at the end of a tenancy or after building work, and commercial carpets through our separate commercial carpet service. Tell us the rooms and the marks that concern you, and some long-standing stains will be discussed honestly before work starts. Call Jason on 07774 252535 or ask for a free quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to clean a carpet?

It depends on the number and size of rooms, stairs and landings, fibre type, condition and stains, furniture moving, any rugs or upholstery added, and access. A quote for your home is the only reliable way to know.

Are stairs included in a room price?

Often not. Stairs are usually priced separately, so check every quote says whether stairs and landings are included.

Is it cheaper to have several rooms done at once?

Combining rooms, stairs and rugs in one visit usually makes better use of the booking than several separate visits.
