Deep clean vs regular clean

By Direct Cleaning Services · Updated

Short answer

A regular clean keeps a home tidy and clean week to week by dealing with the surfaces you see and use every day. A deep clean is a one-off, top-to-bottom clean that also reaches the places a routine clean leaves alone: inside appliances and cupboards, behind furniture, skirting boards, limescale, grout and built-up grease. How long a deep clean takes depends on the size of the home, its condition and what is included.

What a regular clean covers

A regular clean, whether you do it yourself or have a cleaner visit weekly or fortnightly, is about maintenance. It typically means dusting reachable surfaces, wiping kitchen worktops, the hob front and the sink, cleaning the bathroom suite and mirrors, emptying bins, vacuuming carpets and mopping hard floors. It keeps a home that is already in good order looking that way.

Because a regular clean repeats on a schedule, it is designed to be efficient. It does not usually involve moving appliances, emptying cupboards or scrubbing every grout line, because those jobs do not need doing every week.

What a deep clean adds

A deep clean resets the whole home. It deals with the dirt that builds up slowly in places routine cleaning does not reach, so the work is more detailed and more physical. The typical extras are:

  • Inside the oven, fridge, freezer, microwave and other appliances.
  • Inside kitchen cupboards and drawers, once they have been emptied.
  • Behind and underneath furniture and appliances that can be moved safely.
  • Skirting boards, doors, frames and handles washed rather than dusted.
  • Light fittings, lampshades, switches and sockets.
  • Radiators, including between the panels where they can be reached.
  • Limescale on taps, shower heads and screens, and scrubbed grout.
  • Grease on cupboard doors, extractor hoods and splashbacks.
  • Cobwebs from ceilings and corners, and inside window sills and frames.

Side by side

  • Purpose: a regular clean maintains a standard; a deep clean restores it.
  • Frequency: a regular clean repeats weekly, fortnightly or as you choose; a deep clean is occasional or a one-off.
  • Kitchen: a regular clean wipes visible surfaces; a deep clean goes inside appliances and cupboards and behind units.
  • Bathroom: a regular clean cleans the suite and mirrors; a deep clean also descales and scrubs grout.
  • Furniture: a regular clean vacuums around it; a deep clean moves what can be moved and cleans underneath.
  • Detail: a regular clean dusts reachable surfaces; a deep clean also washes skirting, doors, frames, radiators and light fittings.

When you need a deep clean

The most common reason is a spring clean, but there are plenty of others: moving into a home the previous occupants left grubby, getting a house ready to sell, after building work or decorating, after a long busy spell when cleaning has slipped, after someone has been unwell and you want everything washed down, or before a family occasion.

A deep clean is also the best way to start a regular routine. Bringing the home up to a high standard first means routine visits can maintain it, rather than chasing months of build-up a little at a time. Our house deep cleaning checklist lists everything to cover, room by room.

If you are moving out of a rented property, an end of tenancy clean is the right choice instead. It is similar in depth but done in an empty property and focused on the check-out inspection.

How long does a deep clean take?

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives a fixed time without knowing the home is guessing. These are the things that make the difference:

  1. Size: the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces, and whether there are extra rooms such as a utility, conservatory or loft room.
  2. Condition: a home that is cleaned regularly takes far less time than one with heavy grease, limescale or months of dust.
  3. Scope: whether the oven, fridge, inside cupboards, interior windows, carpets or upholstery are included.
  4. Clutter: clear surfaces and emptied cupboards are much quicker to clean than full ones.
  5. Access: whether the home is furnished or empty, and how easily appliances and furniture can be moved.

Doing it yourself

If you plan to deep clean yourself, split it into rooms over several days rather than trying to do everything at once. Work from the top of each room down, leave floors until last, open windows when using cleaning products and never mix them. Take care moving heavy appliances, and leave anything plumbed or wired in place if you are not sure it can be moved safely.

When to call a professional

Booking a professional deep clean makes sense when time is short, when the home needs bringing back up to standard before a sale or a move, or when you would like a clean starting point before regular cleaning begins.

Frequently asked questions

What is a deep clean?

A one-off, top-to-bottom clean that covers everything in a regular clean plus inside appliances and cupboards, behind and under furniture, skirting boards, light fittings, radiators, limescale, grout and built-up grease.

How often should you deep clean a house?

There is no fixed rule. Many people deep clean once or twice a year, often as a spring clean, and before or after a move. Regular cleaning in between keeps the home from building up again.

Is a deep clean the same as an end of tenancy clean?

They are similar in depth, but an end of tenancy clean is done in an empty property and focuses on returning it in the condition recorded at the start of the tenancy.
