What affects the cost of solar panel cleaning

By Direct Cleaning Services · Updated

Short answer

The cost of solar panel cleaning depends mainly on how many panels there are, how high and steep the roof is, and how easily the array can be reached. Bird droppings and lichen take more work than light dust, commercial rooftop arrays are planned differently from a home, and regular cleans or combining the visit with gutter or window cleaning also affect the quote. Telling the cleaner where the array is positioned is the most useful starting point.

Why the position of the array matters most

Solar panels are cleaned wherever they happen to be fitted, so the same number of panels can be a very different job on a single-storey garage roof, a two-storey house or a large commercial building. The amount of dirt matters too, but access is usually the first question. That is why solar panel quotes start with where the array is, not just how many panels it has.

The factors that change the quote

  • Number of panels: more panels means more glass to clean and rinse, and large arrays are planned as a bigger job.
  • Roof height: panels on a bungalow, garage or outbuilding are easier to reach than those on a two or three storey house.
  • Roof pitch and layout: a steep roof, panels split across different roof faces, or panels set back behind dormers all affect how the work is planned.
  • Access from the ground: whether there is clear space at the foot of the building or obstacles such as conservatories, extensions, narrow passages or neighbouring buildings.
  • Type of build-up: light dust and pollen rinse away more readily than bird droppings, while lichen and moss along the frames take longer to lift.
  • Homes and commercial rooftops: commercial arrays are often larger and on flat or industrial roofs, so they are scoped as a separate kind of job.
  • One-off or regular: a first clean of panels that have never been cleaned is usually the biggest; regular visits tend to involve less build-up.
  • Combining services: gutter, window or conservatory cleaning at the same visit can make good use of one trip.

What a good quote should include

A clear solar panel quote should tell you exactly what will be cleaned and how. Look for:

  1. The number of panels and which roof faces or buildings are included.
  2. The cleaning method, for example pure water and soft brushes with no detergent left on the glass.
  3. How the panels will be reached, and confirmation that no one will stand or lean equipment on the panels.
  4. Whether bird droppings, lichen and frame edges are included.
  5. Whether a regular schedule is offered, and how that would work.
  6. Confirmation that the business holds public liability insurance.

How to compare quotes like for like

Check each quote covers the same panels and the same method. Ask whether detergents are used, because some can leave a film on the glass that attracts dirt, and check your panel manufacturer's care guidance on what is acceptable. Be wary of anyone who promises a fixed increase in output; cleaning removes dirt, but it does not measure or change how your installation performs. If a quote seems much lower, ask how the panels will be reached and whether all of them are included.

Faults with panels, wiring or birds nesting underneath are for your installer or a specialist rather than a cleaner, so a cleaning quote should not include them.

Deciding how often to pay for cleaning

Panels near trees, busy roads or the coast tend to get dirty more quickly than others, and low-pitched panels clear less in the rain. Our guide on whether solar panels need cleaning explains how to check yours using your monitoring and a look from the ground, which helps you decide whether a clean is worth booking now or later.

When to call a professional

Any panels on a roof you cannot reach safely from the ground should be left to a professional. Never climb onto the roof or lean a ladder against the panels to clean them. Our guide to cleaning solar panels covers what is safe to do yourself on panels within easy reach.

Frequently asked questions

How much does solar panel cleaning cost?

It depends on the number of panels, the roof height and pitch, access, the amount of build-up and whether it is a home or commercial array. A quote based on your installation is the only reliable figure.

Is it cheaper to clean solar panels with gutters or windows?

Booking gutter, window or conservatory cleaning at the same visit can make better use of one trip, so it is worth asking for them together.

Does solar panel cleaning use chemicals?

Our method uses pure water and soft brushes, which dry without spots and leave no detergent film on the glass.
